In contrast to the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, the bilateral Consular Convention between Ukraine and the Republic of Belarus considerably extends the authorities of the consular officials.
Pursuant to the Convention, "in the shortest period of time, but not later than in four days since the detention, arrest or any other restriction of freedom of the citizens of accrediting state, the authorized bodies of a relevant State shall notify a corresponding consular official". The convention also secures realization of the right of a consular official to visit or communicate with the citizen in order to render him\her a necessary legal assistance.
